There is no better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with rock ‘n’ roll. Thanks to Atlanta glam punk four piece Starbenders, we have their new album to fall in love with. The hauntingly unpredictable Love Potions is released today on Sumerian Records.
The record opens with ‘Hangin’ on Tonight’, which has echoes of Siouxie And The Banshees. The nostalgia of the synth and the brooding guitars prepare us for the dive into the dark and gritty chorus of ‘Precious’, which also features the raw and seductive vocals of Palaye Royale frontman Remington Leith.
We are then hit with a hat-trick of awesomeness from three of the standout tracks on the album, ‘Holy Mother’, ‘Bitches be Witches’, and ‘London’. The closing song ‘One of Us’ conjures up memories of The Bangles pop hit ‘Manic Monday’ and brings the retro rock theme full circle.
Love Potions is a magical concoction of glam rock swagger, punk rock fury, and catchy pop earworms that will have you singing the choruses for days. Invoking artists like Heart, Joan Jett And The Blackhearts, and Pat Benetar whilst remaining totally current is one of the spells this exciting band are able to cast.
Talking about the album, vocalist Kimi Shelter says, “There comes a time when dreams turn into reality. We have to be careful what we wish for, as anything goes in the land of our creation. The friction of this existence is my deepest source of inspiration. The making of Love Potions pushed us beyond the walls of our perceived limitations. This record is a living diary of a band that exists between two worlds. Please be warned that upon listening, you will become a part of a ritual that is in motion. You will be a part of our story. If you’re with us, you must be kind, you must be brave, and above all, you must be free.”
It’s pretty clear from this album that Starbenders are going to be a band to watch, and whatever they do next will be both unpredictable and amazing.
Open your minds and ready your souls, Starbenders are coming for both.
