Captain Marvel cuts loose in second trailer

This was a big week for Marvel, and it all started with the release of new posters and a second trailer for their first female-led superhero film, Captain Marvel. While not as exciting and a bit more cheesy than the first trailer, this new selection of clips from the film gives us some backstory for the character of Carol Danvers, and some expository dialogue on how her powers will work, how she’ll retain her youth between the nineties-set film and her next appearance in Avengers: Endgame, as well as a closer look at the supporting players in the Kree-Skrull War which will be one of the focuses of the film:

Outside of the trailer release, some potentially spoiler-y information came out of some merchandising about the true identity of Jude Law’s character. Many assumed he was playing the comic-book character Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel, but now we know he’s instead playing Mar-Vell’s arch-foe Yon-Rogg, which may suggest that he and the Kree are just as much the antagonists of the film as Ben Mendelsohn and his shape-shifting Skrulls.

Captain Marvel flies into cinemas on March 8th 2019.

The Master of Kung Fu coming to the MCU

Post-Endgame, Marvel will have capped off the Avengers franchise, saved Spider-Man by delivering a more heartfelt take on the character than Sony was able to achieve, introduced a hugely successful black superhero franchise to the world, as well as (presumably) two successful female superheroes who finally managed to get their names in the titles of their movies. However, one thing they haven’t yet cracked is bringing Asian superheroes to the big screen.

But that may be about to change.

This week, it was revealed that one of the film projects Marvel are currently working on is a Shang-Chi movie. Shang-Chi isn’t neccessarily a superhero in the same respect as Spider-Man or the Hulk, so much as he is a guy who is just really really great at Kung Fu. So much so that he’s known as the ‘Master of Kung Fu’ in the Marvel Universe. On top of that, he also has a nefarious supervillain for a father, so a Shang-Chi movie could take the MCU to some new and interesting places (although for a time, that father was the caricature Fu Manchu, so you can expect some changes on the film side of things).

A script is currently being written by Chinese-American writer Dave Callaham (Jean-Claude Van Johnson) and Marvel is looking for Asian and Asian American directors who may be interested in helming the film. As of yet, there’s no word on when this film will come out, but insiders say it’s being fast tracked, so the movie could be in cinemas sooner than you think.

Callaham’s Jean-Claude Van Johnson is available on Amazon Prime Video now.

“We’re in the endgame now”

It’s the moment everyone was waiting for: the first official look at Avengers 4, now confirmed to be titled Endgame.

The trailer is pretty scarce of any details, simply giving us a quick look at the original six Avengers (and Ant-Man) with a focus on Iron Man and Captain America, whilst also setting the tone of the movie and showing us how the characters are dealing with the loss of half the population after Infinity War.

All things considered, it’s a pretty good trailer. It’s exciting, yet also doesn’t really reveal anything. Check it out for yourself:

Avengers: Endgame blasts into cinemas on April 26th, 2019.
