“Constantly evolving, constantly trying to be different” – Interview with Alexa Bliss

With Summer Slam just around the corner, there are two opponents set to clash that will either be the biggest upset or the biggest victory for both competitors. The Women’s Championship is on the line as “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey challenges Alexa Bliss this weekend. Who would’ve thought that her sparkly beginnings in NXT would lead to her defending a championship at the party of the summer against one of the biggest female MMA stars in the world today?

Fortunately for us at SteelChair Magazine, we managed to get in on a call with “Little Miss Bliss” as she prepares for her upcoming fight. Is she ready? Let’s take a look.

One of the first things that was on everybody’s minds as we headed onto the call, was Alexa scared of what she’s about to face? Alexa has proved to be a threat in WWE especially when it comes to protecting what she feels she’s earnt. But this isn’t any old wrestler, this is the woman that took on both Stephanie McMahon and Triple H in one night with Kurt Angle by her side. Ronda is not a pushover, so how did Alexa feel going into the upcoming match? Her reply said it all.

“I wouldn’t say I am intimidated by her, working with different styles makes us better performers. I’ve had matches with Asuka, Charlotte and with Ronda coming from a different style and name behind her, then what a name to beat” She continued by saying “I watched her UFC career and I do think she is what she is called, ‘The Baddest Woman on the Planet’. She is at the forefront of women’s sports in general, she is tough and awesome and I am looking forward to our match at SummerSlam.” She seems to be up to the challenge of working with someone like Rousey, the respect for her opponent was quite clear and it looks like that Alexa will work with Ronda to put on a well put together bout.

The conversation moved on to some reminiscing of days gone. For those unaware, Alexa was at one point a character known as Sparkle Splash… yep.  Her chirpy demeanour soon turned sour as she evolved into the Bliss that we know today. Alexa has turned into an angry, calculating, and cruel villain of Monday Night RAW, so how does she feel about the road she’s taken to get to this point?

“I definitely think I’ve changed a lot since then you know, what we do is very important… If I was the same then as I am now then I wouldn’t be doing my job. Constantly evolving, constantly trying to be different, evolving the character evolving the move-set, because you never want to stay the same forever.”

She’s seen what she needs to change in her career and made the improvements to stay relevant and popular not just with creative, but with the fans as well. The mindset she’s gained on her journey is worth respect from writers like ourselves and audiences alike.

Lastly, we wanted to know one thing regarding Alexa Bliss. Given the fact that she’ll be facing Ronda Rousey soon, who is the dream opponent that Alexa would ultimately want to face in the squared circle? Alexa had only one answer for us and it’s an interesting pick, to say the least. “Trish Stratus, because I watched her when I was growing up. That was one person I was really hoping to get to meet in the ring one day.”

The closest we’ve gotten to this as a possibility was with the Women’s Royal Rumble when Trish actually stepped foot in a WWE ring once again. Although Alexa was spectating the match with her championship in hand, it’s not totally out of the realm of possibility in terms of this match actually happening. The creativity that could come out this encounter could lead to an interesting match, whether this will be for championship gold, on the other hand, is another thing entirely.

Overall, it was a great chat with Alexa. She seemed eager to get into the fight with the “Baddest Woman On The Planet”. Summerslam looks to have some heated battles, with this one seemingly being the one to keep your eye on.

SummerSlam will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. UK viewers can tune in on Sky Sports Box Office, or watch on the award-winning WWE Network.
