Crybaby Special have earned their place as our artist of the week. The gypsy-ska band, made up of Jason Stafford, Ben Wilson and Gianni Scalera, have been using hard-graft, creativity and skill to not only create a name for themselves, but to support other local musicians in the process.
Inspired by the likes of Captain Beefheart and Madness, the Kent three-piece have taken what we know modern punk rock and Ska to be and infused a whole lot of quirk to created their very own eclectic flavour. Intricate guitar riffs and accordion sounding keyboard are layered on top of punchy bass-lines and precision drumming, all sealed together with front man Jason’s distinctive vocals. Energetic and so fast paced it’s almost impossible to imagine how they keep up with themselves. It’s rowdy and contagious.
‘Surrender’ and ‘Beelzebub Boogie’, from their latest release, EP The Writing’s on the Wall, are powerful, fun and sound just as good live as the recorded versions. Commanding excessive dancing, jumping and kicking around, be warned; their live shows should come with a health warning.
This summer sees the band hitting the festival circuit too, with appearances at Create Festival, and Wheels and Fins festival on Sunday 7th September alongside headliners Feeder, Sub Focus, High Contrast and The Libertines.
And if they weren’t already busy enough, Jason and team have also been offering support to fellow local bands with the completion of their very own studio. Created from an old shipping container in Medway, the fully functional studio offers a larger-than-expected space for bands to record. Taking their music into their own hands, front man Jason says; “Bands have to be very creative these days as there isn’t managers, record labels and funding so bands learn how to record at home and learn how to be all of those things at once”
Crybaby Special aren’t you’re average ‘local band’ and their paving the way, not only for the Kent music scene, but their very own genre. Keep an eye on their Facebook and Twitter pages for news on upcoming shows and new releases. Their EP The Writing’s on the Wall is available to download via Soundcloud and Spotify now.
