On Friday, 13th July 2018, FIRST REFORMED comes to cinemas across the UK and Ireland courtesy of Picturehouse Entertainment. From legendary writer/director Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, American Gigolo, Raging Bull), FIRST REFORMED is a gripping new film that ranks amongst some of his very best work.
Reverend Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a solitary parish priest at a small church in upstate New York, which is on the cusp of celebrating its 250th anniversary. Now more of a tourist attraction catering to a dwindling congregation, it has long been eclipsed by its nearby parent church, Abundant Life, with its state-of-the-art facilities. When a pregnant parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) asks Reverend Toller to counsel her husband, a radical environmentalist, Toller is plunged into his own tormented past and finds himself questioning his own future and where redemption might lie. With the pressure on him beginning to grow, he must do everything he can to prevent everything spiraling out of control.
With an outstanding cast that includes Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke (Boyhood, Maudie, Before Midnight), Amanda Seyfried (Les Misérables, Twin Peaks, Mamma Mia), and Cedric Kyles (Larry Crowne, Barbershop), Schrader has delivered a thrillingly fierce film that features an utterly mesmerizing performance from Hawke in the lead role.
Commenting on the release for Picturehouse, Joint Managing Director Clare Binns said “Paul Schrader is an iconic writer and director who has made some of the most influential American films of the past few decades. I am thrilled to be bringing his rich, intelligent and daring new film to UK audiences”
Compulsive, unnerving and thought-provoking in equal measures, FIRST REFORMED earned rave reviews at Toronto, Telluride, Venice, and New York film festivals. The film will receive its UK Premiere at Sundance London on 1stJune and will include an extended introduction to the film by Ethan Hawke. There will be an additional screening of the film at Sundance London on 2nd June. The film will then be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland by Picturehouse Entertainment on Friday 13th July 2018.
