A report came out a few days ago that Warner Bros. was in early talks for what was then dubbed a reboot of the The Matrix. Zak Penn, who is working on the script for the project, has taken to Twitter to clarify that the new Matrix will not be a reboot or remake of the original.

While he doesn’t go into specifics, Penn seems to indicate that the project will be more along the lines of an Expanded Universe take on the franchise, what with citing the anime anthology The Animatrix as well as the comic books. The new Matrix would therefore presumably be a sequel, prequel or spin-off set within the same universe and continuity.

The planned continuation of The Matrix still has no set release date, no director is attached to it and there is no word if franchise creators The Wachowskis or any of the original cast will be involved.
