Warner Bros. are looking into a possible reboot of the popular sci-fi action franchise The Matrix, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While it is still unclear exactly what direction the project will take, apparently Zack Penn is in talks to write a script.

1999’s The Matrix, written and directed by The Wachowskis is widely considered to be one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made. Its groundbreaking special effects and approach to action film-making had a profound impact on Hollywood cinema. Two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, were released in 2003 and were generally less well received.

At this stage, The Wachowski siblings are not involved with the potential new version and there’s no word if they will be in any way. Star of the original trilogy Keanu Reeves has said that he’s open to the idea of returning, if the Wachowskis write and direct and the story is worth it. However, it’s likely that the studio would be more interested in pursuing another lead. THR’s sources claim that there’s an interest in getting Michael B. Jordan to star.

Obviously, there is no planned release date as of yet and the entire project is still in very early development.
