Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Rogue One, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage) will play the lead in the upcoming Sleeping Dogs movie, based on the 2012 video game of the same name, according to a report by Deadline.

An open world action-adventure game developed by United Front Games and Square Enix London, Sleeping Dogs followed Wei Shen (played in the game by Will Yun Lee), a Hong Kong-American police officer on an undercover assignment in the Sun On Yee criminal organization. Donnie Yen will play Wei Shen in the feature length movie adaptation, which is expected to feature a lot of martial arts, racing and boat chases – no word yet if the game’s signature karaoke scenes will also be adapted to the big screen

Despite critical acclaim, Sleeping Dogs did not meet Square Enix’s sales expectations. United Front Games closed down in 2016, leaving the future of the video game franchise uncertain.

Neil Moritz’s production company Original Film will produce the film, along with DJ2 Entertainment. No writer or director is currently attached to the project and a release date has not been set.
