Universal have released the first trailer for the upcoming reboot of The Mummy franchise, which will also be the first installment in their planned Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe.
Directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by Jon Spaihts, The Mummy stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe (who will be playing Dr. Henry Jekyll). Sofia Boutella will play Ahmanet (the titular Mummy), an ancient queen awakened in the present day.
The Mummy was originally a 1932 horror film starring Boris Karloff that had a few sequels in the early-to-mid 1940s. British Hammer Film Productions also had a series of films with a Mummy theme in the late 1950s, but perhaps the most well known iteration of the franchise is the 1999 action-adventure remake of the Karloff version starring Brendan Fraser. It had two sequels, The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), as well as a spin-off series called The Scorpion King.
The planned Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe includes The Mummy, as well as The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing, which are currently in various stages of development.
The Mummy is scheduled for a June 9, 2017 release.
