Disney have announced their casting choice for the young Lando Calrissian that is set to star in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off film focusing on Han Solo’s earlier adventures, which remains currently untitled.

Donald Glover (Community) has been announced to fill the boots left by the beloved Billy Dee Williams, who portrayed the character in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Glover has enjoyed an incredibly successful career thus far. He joined 30 Rock at the age of 21 as a writer, starred in the cult comedy Community series, created, wrote, directed and starred in Atlanta, and also is a successful recording artist under the stage name Childish Gambino. Donald Glover is often cited by fans as an actor they would like to see in a role yet to cast, with the campaign for him to play Spider-Man in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man series being a subject he joked about during his Weirdo stand-up special. Glover will actually next be seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming, albeit in an unconfirmed supporting role.

Glover will star opposite Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!), who is replacing Harrison Ford as a younger Han Solo in the film. Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump StreetThe Lego Movie) will be directing the project, with Lawrence Kasdan (writer for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens) on script duties with his son, Jon Kasdan (Roadies). Lord and Miller stated that “We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,”, before joking that “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”. Little is known about the film, but it is expected to be released in 2018.

Within the new Disney canon for Star Wars, some of Lando Calrissian’s backstory has already been explored within the Marvel Comics miniseries Lando. Additionally, Lando appeared in Disney XD’s Star Wars Rebels animated series, with Billy Dee Williams reprising the role for a voice-over. Nevertheless, the Han Solo movie will undoubtedly provide a more thorough look into Lando’s relationship with Han, potentially covering how the Millennium Falcon ended up passing hands between the two. Chewbacca has also unsurprisingly been confirmed to make an appearance in the film.

The currently untitled Han Solo film is expected to be released in 2018. The first Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One, will be released on 16th December.
