Robert Kirkman’s post-apocalyptic zombie (sorry, “walker” – we don’t use the “z” word around here) thriller, The Walking Dead, has been a staple part of the televisual diets of avid viewers across the globe for the last six years. With only a month until one of the biggest cliff-hangers of the decade gets its payoff, what better time to catch up on the recent adventures of our merry band of survivors as season six comes to DVD and Blu-ray this week courtesy of Entertainment One.
Kicking off where season five ended, season six sees a number of new emotional arcs for our favourite characters, including Carol’s crisis of faith, Eugene finally finding a pair (in more ways than one!), and perhaps most importantly, the long-awaited return of Rick’s old ally Morgan Jones, recovered from his brief bout of lunacy and now on a one-man mission to get through the end of the world without killing any more people.
The citizens of Alexandria, meanwhile, have had more than their fair share of problems. From the failed attempt to herd a massive group of walkers away from the township, a brutal attack by a vicious group known only as the Wolves, to the mysterious name in the wind; “Negan”, season six has made it abundantly clear that Alexandria is not the safehaven it was first believed to be.
Binge-watching season six was an interesting experience. Indeed, sitting down at the beginning, it was amazing to note just how much had happened this year when, whilst watching on a weekly basis, it did seem to drag somewhat. In many ways, this has perhaps been one of the most eventful seasons to date, with none of the main cast (except perhaps Aaron and Spencer) ever feeling under-utilised. Everyone has had issues to deal with, whether it be simply finding momentary happiness (only for it to be immediately ripped away…), or the soul-finding that characters such as Gabriel and Carol have been wrought over.
Of course, many have criticised the complacency of our leads this year; since the horrendously grisly death of Noah near the end of season five, not one lead character has been lost. Sure, there were a few deaths along the way (I shan’t list, for spoilers’ sake), but everyone gets through season six pretty much unscathed.
And thus we welcome Negan.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan blows into the series like a hurricane. A mere five minutes screen time, and he has already etched one of the biggest names in TWD history. The end of this season is even more frustrating second time round.
So go, buy, watch. Re-watch. And keep on the edge of your seats for another month yet!
And my money’s still on Abraham.
