As the summer movie season comes to a close, Disney are ramping up marketing for their upcoming animated blockbuster, Moana, with a new trailer showing a look at the Dwayne Johnson-starring adventure.
Moana is the latest directorial effort from duo Ron Clements and John Musker, who have previously teamed on such Disney classics as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and The Princess and the Frog. The film introduces newcome Auli’i Cravalho as the titular Moana, alongside Dwayne Johnson (Fast and Furious 7) as demi-god Maui, Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Attack of the Clones), singer Nicole Scherzinger (Men in Black III), Rachel House (Hunt for the Wilderpeople), Jermaine Clement (What We Do In The Shadows) and Alan Tudyk (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil). Taiki Waititi, who co-wrote and co-directed What We Do in the Shadows with Jermaine Clement, is also lending a hand on the screenplay.
Moana will be the 56th animated feature film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, and the second this year following Zootropolis. While Disney releases late in the year are often known for receiving huge delays in the UK, such as Big Hero 6 which premiered in early November for the US but in late January for the UK, Moana will be released in the UK just over a week after its original American release date. In case the trailer didn’t provide enough information for you, here’s Disney’s official synopsis:
Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.
Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”), produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i, “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
Moana will be released in the UK on 2nd December.
