The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Disney are developing a sequel/reboot of 1991 action-adventure movie The Rocketeer.

An homage to the serial heroes of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, The Rocketeer was created by Dave Stevens and published by Pacific Comics in 1982. The central premise is that a man named Cliff Secord finds an experimental jetpack that allows him to lead a life of daring and adventure.

In 1991, Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) directed a live-action version that starred Billy Campbell as Secord, as well Jennifer Connelly, Timothy Dalton and Alan Arkin. The movie was considered a commercial disappointment, but has since gained a cult following.

Max Winkler and Matt Spicer will pen the script for the upcoming sequel/reboot, which will be titled The Rocketeers. The movie will be set six years after the events of the original and will follow a young African-American female pilot, who takes up the mantle of Rocketeer after Secord disappears while fighting the Nazis.

No casting, director or release date have been announced for The Rocketeers as of yet.
