Deadline is reporting that Stefano Sollima (Gomorra) is the frontrunner to direct the sequel to 2015’s drug war thriller Sicario, directed by Denis Villenueve.

The sequel, titled Soldado (Spanish for soldier), will focus on Benicio Del Toro’s shadowy character Alejandro Gillick, as well as Josh Brolin’s Matt Graver, and will be written by Taylor Sheridan (Sons of Anarchy), who also scripted the original. Emily Blunt’s principal main character Kate from Sicario is not expected to return.

Soldado will be a co-production between Black Label Media and Lionsgate and the studios are hoping to start production by fall of this year. Basil Iwanyk of Thunder Road Pictures and Molly Smith of Black Label as well as Edward L. McDonnell and Thad and Trent Luckinbill will produce.

No release date has been set yet.
