John Boyega (Attack the Block, Star Wars The Force Awakens) will co-produce and play the lead in Legendary Pictures’ Pacific Rim 2.

Steven S. Knight will direct the sequel based on the world created by Guilermo del Toro and Travis Beacham. Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first movie.

“It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men,” said Mary Parent, Legendary’s Vice Chairman of Worldwide Production.

“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The ‘Pacific Rim’ universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job,” stated del Toro.

Pacific Rim is a 2013 science-fiction monster film set in a future where mankind was attacked by Kaiju, colossal monsters that have emerged from an inter-dimensional portal. Earth’s first and last line of defense against the Kaiju were the Jaegers, giant humanoid mechs operated by at least two pilots.

Despite a positive critical and audience reception, Pacific Rim underperformed at the box office, leaving the future of a potential series initially uncertain.

Pacific Rim 2 is targeting a production start date later this year and will be distributed by Universal Pictures around the world with the exception of China.
