X-Men franchise producer Simon Kinberg has confirmed to Collider that the upcoming, as of yet untitled Wolverine movie will have an R-rating and that it has already started filming.

“It’s a very radical, bold, different Wolverine than you’ve ever seen in any of these movies. (…) It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie. It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.”

There have been rumors that the next Wolverine movie will be based on the comic book storyline Old Man Logan, set in a future in which supervillains rule the world and Wolverine has hung up his claws. Kinberg saying that the movie takes place in the future and is kind of like a western in tone doesn’t outright confirm those speculations, but it does make them more credible.

The untitled Wolverine sequel will mark the final time that actor Hugh Jackman will play the title character. It is scheduled to release on March 3, 2017.
