Warner Bros. is developing a Harley Quinn movie, which Margot Robbie is attached to produce and star in, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Robbie will be playing the DC anti-heroine in the upcoming Suicide Squad as well.
There are very few details regarding the project. An unknown female writer is working on the script and apparently it will not be a Harley Quinn solo movie, but rather more of an ensemble piece centered on several of DC’s female heroes and villains. Batgirl and the Birds of Prey are names that have come up, although it is unclear to what extent they will feature in the movie, if at all.
Margot Robbie herself was reportedly the main driving force behind the movie, having developed a passion for DC’s female characters while researching Harley Quinn in preparation for her role in Suicide Squad.
The character of Harley Quinn was created by writer Paul Dini and first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992, as the lover and sidekick of The Joker. She grew to be so popular that she was eventually introduced into the comics as well.
Her portrayal by Margot Robbie will mark the first time the character will appear in a live-action feature film. Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on August 5, 2016.
