Films portraying the formative years of college are common place in Hollywood. Richard Linklater’s latest film, Everybody Wants Some, takes this subgenre of film to a new level. The film follows a group of college students who are part of the college baseball team, and their attempts to navigate the first few days of the college year. In particular, the focus is on Blake Jenner’s character Jake, who is a new student at the college and his attempts to fit in to an already established friendship group.
Filled with real heart, and full of consistently funny jokes and scenes. Although the main cast is male, the supporting female cast compliment them well, and do not fall into the normal stereotypes of female college students in other similar films.
This film has a very similar feel to Linklater’s previous film Boyhood and felt like a natural carry on from it. The soul of the film lies in the connections and relationships formed between the members of the baseball team and the camaraderie. Although the story is pretty loose it makes you reminisce about college days, and each character is immediately relatable. Despite the large cast, each character is allowed to grow in their own way and each cast member adds to a strong dynamic within the group. Zoey Deutch puts in a great and heartwarming performance as Beverley, the lead character’s love interest and there is clear chemistry between the two. The plot at times can be a tad flimsy, but you feel a natural connection to the characters, and this makes up for it. Baseball is a secondary plot but the first practice in particular raises a lot of laughs.
The film’s tagline, “Here for a Good Time, not a Long Time”, perfectly sums up the movie. The film focuses on surviving in college, when hundreds of students with contrasting opinions and lifestyles are thrust together. The soundtrack perfectly complements the film and is understated at times in the more emotional and touching scenes.
Everybody Wants Some seems likely to go under the radar, thanks to some larger releases filling up cinema screens. However, this is a film that truly portrays the fears and insecurities that come with college, and how often it’s just a case of surviving the best you can.
