Actor and professional wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has confirmed via a post on his Instagram page that he will play the titular pulp hero Doc Savage in an upcoming film, which is to be directed by Shane Black (Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys), with a script by Black, Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry.
Doc Savage was created by publisher Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic in 1933 and ran for 13 years and 181 issues in total, which would later be reprinted as paperback books. The character has appeared in other media, such as radio, film and comic books and has served as an inspiration for Superman.
Clark Savage Jr. was trained from birth by his father to have superhuman abilities, such as incredible strength, endurance and a photographic memory. He is a gifted physician, surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, martial arts experts, a master of disguise and a musician.
Along with starring in the film, Johnson will also produce it through his Seven Bucks Productions banner with along with Hiram Garcia, as well as Neal H. Moritz and Ori Marmur through Original Film, and Michael Uslan.
Shane Black is currently set to direct a new Predator movie for 20th Century Fox with a planned February 9, 2018 release date. Dwayne Johnson, meanwhile, is working on the Baywatch remake, the eight installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise, as well as the Jumanji remake.
No release date has been set yet for Doc Savage.
