Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Ex Machina) has signed on to play British archaeologist/adventurer Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, according to The Hollywood Reporter The movie will be directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (The Wave) with a script by Transformers 5 writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
Previous reports suggested Star Wars The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley was up for the role, but that appears to no longer be the case.
Angelina Jolie last played the character from the popular video game franchise in two live action movies, 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.
The original Tomb Raider game will celebrate its 20 year anniversary later this year. The latest installment in the series is Rise of the Tomb Raider, which is currently available on Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC, and will be released later this year for PS4.
