I have a slight obsession with horror films, so it’s safe to say I’ve seen most of the popular ones. As I have also watched the majority of the selection on Netflix, here’s my top 5.

The Amityville Horror

Based on a true story, this film stars Ryan Reynolds with his top off, so worth a watch for that alone! It’s full of suspense and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. I think there’s always something scary about haunted houses and this one is very creepy, especially when it involves children. This film has a few jump scares, but that’s expected in most horrors. I like the way music is used to create the suspense. I know there is a lot of horror films out there based on a haunted house and ghosts etc, but this one does a better job of explaining why, which means you can understand it. It is a remake, so some things are exaggerated slightly, but it definitely gave me the chills.

Teeth

Well, I think the fact that once you find out the ‘teeth’ are in another place other than the mouth, it’s enticing. Yes, this girl has teeth in her.. nether regions. Might put the boys off sex for a while! It’s so horrifying, it’s kind of funny.. but it’s not meant to be a horror comedy. I did feel a bit weird after watching this one, as it does make you cringe a lot! I don’t think there’s been a film like this before, but I do think that there is some kind of message behind it. Perhaps that women should be approached with care and not just seen as a sexual object. Maybe don’t watch it alone.

Woman

Took me a while to get into this one, but it was worth the wait. I think what makes it scarier is that could actually happen, well maybe. A tribe woman that lives in the woods captured by a man who keeps her for his family.. and he rapes her. Some of the elements remind me of The Shining; the fact that they are in an isolated situation, with not much contact with the outside world. I felt a lot of sympathy for the children in this film, as you can tell they are aware that their father is doing something wrong, but they are too scared to say anything. A bit graphic and uncomfortable to watch, but the ending is good.

Grace

This one is also a bit uncomfortable to watch and put me off having a baby for a while! The baby has a thirst for something other than milk, and well… let’s just say all babies are not cute. It is easy to feel for the mother in this film, because she’s alone with a new born and all she wants is to make sure she’s being a good mum. She doesn’t care if it’s wanting blood, blood she will give it. Again, another element of isolation because she makes sure she has no contact with anyone outside her house.

The Stepfather

Again, scary because it could actually happen, this step dad has had several identities and uses them to meet women and become a step father to their children. But he is not trust worthy, and this step son realizes, much to his mother’s disgust and tries to do something about it. I was on the edge of my seat throughout this film, because you just don’t know what he is going to do next, and you really fear for the son and his girlfriend.
