Less than a year after his biographical sports thriller The Program, Stephen Frears brings us a different sort of biography. Florence Foster Jenkins focuses on the life of an American socialite who became a surprising star after taking up amateur operatic singing.

The real draw to her performances though was her terrible pitch, diction and general lack of melody.

The trailer doesn’t reveal THE VOICE just yet and there certainly seems to a comic tone at play, given Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant’s mugging and the raised eye brows of The Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg.

It all looks like good fun and potentially another Oscar baiting performance from Streep. We’ll see for ourselves when it’s released on 6th May.
