Having directed two of the most psychologically grueling American films of the decade Blue Valentine and A Place Beyond the Pines director Derek Cianfrance returns with a period drama.

The Light Between Oceans, based on the bestselling novel by M.L. Steadman, sees lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and his wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander) discover a boat washed ashore carrying a dead man and a two-month old baby. Rescuing the child they decide to raise her but this decision will have devastating consequences that may destroy their lives. Rachel Weisz co-stars as the woman who may or may not be the child’s real mother.

The subject matter could potentially drift into TV movie melodramatics but knowing Cianfrance’s MO the film will likely be an unflinchingly raw, plus with three actors of that calibre taking the material on it’s one to watch when it’s released later this year.
