M. Night Shylaman’s ten part mini-series Wayward Pines sees Secret Service agent Ethan Burke (Oscar-nominee Matt Dillon: Crash) arrives in a quaint town outside of Idaho on a mission to find two missing federal agents. Instead of answers, Ethan’s investigation only turns up more questions. What’s wrong with Wayward Pines? Each step closer to the truth takes Ethan further from the life he knew, from the husband and father he was, until he must face the terrifying reality that he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive.
This picturesque hamlet is host to a myriad of mysterious residents, played by an expert ensemble cast including Academy Award winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter) as sinister Nurse Pam, Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard (Prisoners) as the enigmatic Sheriff Pope, Carla Guigno (Sin City) as the evasive Kate Hewson and Golden Globe nominee Toby Jones (The Girl) as the duplicitous Dr. Jenkins. The cast also features Hope Davis (The Newsroom), Juliette Lewis (Secrets and Lies), Reed Diamond (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) and Shannyn Sosaamon (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).
To mark the DVD release of Wayward Pines on 17th August, we’re taking a look at the locations of some of TV’s creepiest towns…
Sunnydale, California (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is set in the fictional California town of Sunnydale, whose suburban Sunnydale High School sits on top of a gateway to demon realms, located beneath the school library. This gateway is the cause of the evil creatures and supernatural phenomena that occurs on a daily basis in not so sunny, Sunnydale.
Twin Peaks, Washington (Twin Peaks)
Cult classic Twin Peaks set in… Twin Peaks, traces Agent Dale Cooper’s investigation of the mysterious death of homecoming Queen Laura Palmer. Way too much creepy weirdness—of which a dancing dwarf (a.k.a The Man from Another Place) and a possibly psychic Log Lady are the most benign—to recommend anyone ever relocating there.
Collinsport (Dark Shadows)
This gothic soap opera was set in a small coastal village in Maine and aired from 1966 to 1971. The monochromatic melodrama followed one wealthy family with a dark secret; The Collins. The phrase skeletons in the closet doesn’t serve to cover this one, with tales of vampires, ghosts, werewolves, zombies, witches and a parallel universe.
Mystic Falls, Virginia (The Vampire Diaries)
A small fictional town in the state of Virginia haunted by supernatural beings including vampires, witches and werewolves. Elena falls in love with a young vampire named Stefan. Elena soon realises she also has feelings for Stefan’s brother both of who are lure her further into the darkness.
White Pine Bay (Bates Motel)
The eerily chilling Bates Motel has successfully transferred the characters of Alfred Hitchcock’s infamous horror to the small screen in modern day America. The town is a hotbed of police corruption, drug cartels, dark desires and twisted family secrets. None more so than those held by the local hoteliers; eccentric Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga)
Rosewood (Pretty Little Liars)
Rosewood for most residents is a nice town, school, coffee shop, bars…but for Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily the quiet streets of this bucolic Pennsylvania postcode spells danger at every turn. These four high school girls are tormented by a hooded, sociopathic serial killer who calls himself ‘A’, determined to ruin their lives.
Hemlock Grove (Hemlock Grove)
Eli Roth’s Netflix series has become a teen favourite owing to its hot young cast. Rumours amongst residents about the Godfrey Institute for Biomedical Technologies and Hemlock Acres Hospital point to abominable medical experiments. There’s also chatter about werewolves, cults, and murder.
Bellefleur (The X-Files)
We are first introduced to this fictional town in Oregon following the suspicious murder of a teenager. Throughout this cult series, FBI agents Mulder and Scully are taken on a journey through the supernatural, occult and alien, as its residents seek to cover up a dirty little secret.
Wisteria Lane (Desperate Housewives)
This white-picket fence laces address is part of the town of Fairview in Eagle State. Most likely the pastel coloured houses in the lane were built between the 1940s or 1950’s due to the architecture that screams Pleasantville. The show followed the lives of a group of women as seen through the eyes of a dead neighbour who committed suicide in the very first episode. The eight years of crimes and misdemeanours that take place behind closed doors in this perfect, upper-middle class suburbia is anything but Stepford.
Wayward Pines (Wayward Pines)
Wayward Pines a spooky town nestled in an even spookier forest is visited by Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon), a Secret Service agent heading toward this small Idaho town in search of two missing colleagues. Ethan works to discover the truth, and once he does, he will have to make hard choices.
