Johnny Depp’s always been at his best when he gets to truly dress up and immerse himself in a character, particularly if they’re based on real life people. His roles in Donnie Brasco, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Public Enemies are among some of hi best. Unfortunately ever since his success with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise he seems more comfortable delving head first into a fancy dress box coming out with a funny hat and accent and screaming “Ta-Da!”.

It’s pleasingly to see that he’s back on similar Donnie Brasco territory with Black Mass. Directed by Scott Cooper who’s previous films include the impressive Crazy Heart and Out of the Furnace. Depp plays Irish mobster James “Whiey” Bulger, who turns informant to FBI man Joel Edgerton against a rival criminal family, in order to become one of the most powerful crime lords in America.

The cast also features Benedict Cumberbatch as Bulger’s Senator brother, Sienna Miller and Dakota Johnson. The first trailer released shows Depp on proper acting mode again as opposed to his pantomime performances, yes technically there’s still bald caps and accents but it’s certainly the most compelling he’s looked in years. The scene which frames the trailer also feels a little too Goodfellas but it also works terrifically to draw you straight into Bulger’s world.

I for one will be heading to see Black Mass when it hits UK screens on September 25th 2015.
