For those of our readers who don’t know, who the heck are Only Rivals?
A four piece alternative rock band from Dublin, Ireland
An Irish Pop Punk band, not something you come across everyday. What bands have helped influence your music?
Blink 182, New Found Glory, Foo Fighters, Brand New, Saves the Day, Manchester Orchestra…. The list goes on
You are currently out on the Pop Punks Not Dead tour, which is kind of a mini Warped Tour of sorts. What’s it like to be out with these bands? And how did it feel to get invited out?
It’s amazing to be invited out to play alongside a band like New Found Glory. We are huge fans in the first place. All the bands have been so welcoming and it’s just been a great atmosphere all round.
You seemed to have a crowd when we saw you in Nottingham, especially for such an early stage time. What’s the reaction been like for you on this tour?
The whole tour has been amazing. The reaction we’ve been getting so far from the crowd has been great and hopefully we’ve won a few people over and they want to hear more from our band.
NFG are seasoned pros and we actually caught Ian watching your set from side-stage (in Nottingham). Are you spending much time with them, are they giving you tips or advice?
Yeah we’ve been spending a good amount of time with them, they come into our dressing room to hang and are always up for a laugh, they just create a good atmosphere for everyone and make you feel comfortable to be on the tour. I think watching how they go about playing the shows and still love what they do is advice enough.
You completed your album earlier this year, what should we expect?
Big Drums, RIFFAGE and some catchy melodies.
What’s next, when are we going to see you guys in the UK again?
The next step is to release the album maybe early next year. Spring/summer time and maybe a tour to promote it but nothing is set and stone yet.
What would you like to be remembered for?
Being good musicians, good song writers and good people.
Dream dinner guest (dead or alive)?
How long do you spend in-front of the mirror?
Favourite swear word?
Best excuse you’ve used to breakup with someone?
It’s not you it’s me.
Best day of your life?
Worst thing you’ve ever put in your mouth?
I can’t answer that.
Last band you saw (not on the same bill)?
As a child what did you want to be when you grew up?
A musician or a wrestler.
What would you say if you met the Queen?
Fancy a fry up?
Weirdest moment of your life?
A doctor nearly ran me over in his car, weird moment.
Last time you were starstruck?
When I met Oprah.
Only ever whisper or shout?
Worst job pre-band?
Who would you like to hear cover one of your songs, and which song?
Would love to hear Manchester Orchestra cover our song “Details” – they would probably do a better job!
Who would be in your Super Group of musicians who have passed away?
Kurt Cobain, Jimmy Hendrix, Tommy Ramone, Phil Lynott
The bands yet to be titled debut album will be out in the spring of next year. Until then you can always check out the bands E.P. “Details” or follow them on the usual social media pages.
