SO! A big welcome to the UK, this is the Candy Hearts first time in the UK…?

Yes. First time personally also!

How’s the UK treating you?

It’s really nice, it isn’t as different as I thought it would be from America which is good. Everyone seems very nice here.

You’re a few dates into the Pop Punks Not Dead Tour, how has it been generally and how have the crowds been?

The tour has been great, I didn’t expect to play to so many people. I don’t know why, I just never expected we would. That there are people who know the lyrics to our songs and stuff is really cool because this is really really far away from home. It’s a different country. So that has been really rewarding for us.

The tour feels like a mini Warped Tour of sorts (or the closest thing the UK gets), how is the relationship between all the bands? And on a personal level as the only girl, is it a bit of a sausage-fest?!

Yeah, me and Celine (she’s playing guitar with us) are the only girls here. So yes, it is very much a sausage-fest!

Do you get treated differently?

Erm no, I think they tease me about things they wouldn’t tease each other about just because I’m a girl but other than that not really.

As a girl (coming from a girl) we have more pressures than boys anyway, being the lead of a band do you feel that more so?

I do, I feel a lot of times people have a difficult time listening to what I have to say when I’m trying to delegate tasks and things like that. And it isn’t even that I’m a girl, it’s just the type of girl that I am. I’m very quiet and sometimes emotional, and silly and I’m very small and just really girly. That’s just the type of girl I am, and I think it is harder for people to take me seriously. What was the last part of that question? I always feel like there is pressure to look a lot more perfect on stage than boys. Boys can just go on wearing whatever they want. Every night I read comments about the way that I look, and if stuff is pretty or not pretty. I’m just waiting for somebody to comment on the fact that I haven’t shaved my armpits in two weeks, because it is very evident. But you can’t win, you really can’t win because somebody will always comment or they’ll find something wrong, always. And I always feel they don’t put men under a microscope in that way.

The new album ‘All The Ways You Let Me Down’ came out this year, are you pleased with how it all came together and the reception it has received? It is a damn good album!

Thank you, and yeah I’m so excited about it. When we were working on it I was always a bit worried, because this is the first record I’ve written without our old guitarist who left last year. So I was very nervous to make an album without him, because it’s something I’ve never done before, we’ve been friends since childhood. It came to me like I thought it was best record we could possibly make at the time, like it came out exactly the way we wanted it to come out and we are sold thrilled with it. People have been so nice about it, and are so happy about it and know the words at the shows and it’s great.

Chad from New Found Glory produced the album, how was it working with him?

He produced this album, and the last one we did. Working with him is a dream, I feel like he knows exactly the sound we are going for and knows how to pull it out of our songs. If I feel like a song is a bit too pop punk and not alternative enough, he knows exactly what each song means. We pretty much always agree on everything, maybe we’ve had a couple of tiffs here and there but then I’m always like “you know what, you were right.”

Do you get what you want to do musically? There isn’t too much outside pressure?

Oh no, ultimately it’s our band and he knows that and we can do what we want to do. But I just happen to agree, because we have the same vision.

What’s next for you guys, have you got plans to come back to the UK? Headline tour perhaps?

We don’t have plans yet, but we are working on stuff. We would love to come back, as soon as we can.

Last question before the Speed Round, how’s Big Red (Candy Hearts tour bus highlighted in their episode of Bus Invaders)?

Well she just had some pretty expensive surgery on our last trip when we were in Florida. Apparently they’re was a bunch of stuff under our van that was illegal to have on your van, and the guy was like “yo, this isn’t street legal. I can’t give it back to you.”

And you’d been travelling around the country in it?

Yeah, I don’t know if it was necessarily a dangerous thing that was wrong with it. But we went in to get the break fixed, and he found all this stuff that was welded together and he fixed that too so now she’s legal. I can drive her around without getting arrested.

Speed Round

What would you like to be remembered for?

My music.

Dream dinner guest (dead or alive)?

John K. Samson the singer of The Weakerthans.

How long do you spend in front of the mirror?

Twenty minutes.

Favourite swear word?

Oh, it’s a c word but I can’t say it.

It’s very bad, it isn’t as bad here as it is in America.

Best excuse you’ve ever used to break-up with someone?

I’ve only ever broken-up with one guy, and “you cheated on me” was the excuse.

Best day of your life?

I don’t know!

Worse thing you’ve ever put in your mouth?

Vegemite! Oh wait, I ate ants once by accident. I put my bagel by a window, and I grabbed it and ate it and I looked down and it was crawling with ants and I almost vomited. But Vegemite tasted far worse.

Last band you went to see live (that weren’t on the same bill as you)?

What would you say if you met the Queen?

Ask for a selfie.

When was the last time you were starstuck?

I don’t get starstuck that often, but I definitely was recently and I can’t remember who it was. I think it might have been the guy from the Lemonheads when I saw them play, and he was standing near me and I was like “should I talk to him, should I not” but then I decided not to talk to him just in case he was mean and it would crush me forever.

Weirdest moment of your life?

I think realising that this is what my life is, was the weirdest moment and that it didn’t go back to normal for quite a while.

Worst job pre-band?

Well I think I have many worst jobs post-band. My worse job ever was working at a parenting magazine and everyone there was sorority girls, who were all just very mean to me. That’s why it was bad, because they were mean.

Who would you like to hear cover one of your songs, and which song?

I would really like to hear The Lemonheads or The Cherry Blossoms cover I Miss You.

Dream super-group made up of musicians who have passed away.

That have passed away! I guess Kurt Cobain would play guitar, and Amy Winehouse to sing. Those two doing a project together. I feel like most of the musicians I listen to aren’t playing any more and are very old, but are all mostly still alive..

Huge thanks to Mariel for squeezing some time in with us pre-show, she was so lovely! And the Candy Hearts are genuinely awesome, go check them out now.
