Lapland has recently released their debut self-titled album in the UK following the US release earlier in the year. The album is 10 tracks strong and showcases Josh Mease’s knack for experimentation with a wide array of genres within his body of work. Throughout this album, this ability is showcased through the innovative use of a wide range of instruments on each and every track. No two tracks on the album are similar thus providing fans of all genres of music with something to appreciate.
The Album begins with the track ‘Unwise’, a laid back number with slow fluttering synthetic overtones that create a dreamy atmosphere throughout. Upon initial listen, this track may convince the listener that the entirety of the album will follow suit and comprise of entirely laid back synth work. This however is not the case. Progressing to the second and third tracks, it becomes obvious that the album is far from initial expectations. ‘Overboard’ is a mostly acoustic track that heavily relies on mellow acoustic guitars for its melody and ‘Aeroplane’ is comprised of mostly piano work. Both tracks however share the same beauty of simplicity- even in the lyrics.
‘Drink Me Dry’ is a surprising track- and stands out from the rest of the tracks on the album, not only as it is followed by ‘Memory’ that abruptly returns the rest of the album to the dreamy synth quality of the first but also because of its western undertones that make it stand out as one of the more upbeat tracks on the album. Although the album ends on a slow note with ‘La La La’ the album comes full circle as the track is just as beautifully structured as the opening track- an excellent track to end the album with.
Overall, although the album is sonically throughout, it is impossible to deny that Mease manages to make all the various elements of his work come together to create an album that is structurally innovative and beautiful.
