Rosewater is the directorial debut of Jon Stewart, a US chat show host who’s cornered the market in currnet events satire. His style is the irreverent lampooning of the rich and powerful that can sometimes border on the fratboyish. This film looks to have a vastly different tone to Stewarts usuall, albeit hilarious and spot on, shenanigans. Rosewater is the story of Maziar Bahari, an Iranian-Canadian journalist who is interrogated by the Iranian Government because, of all things, he was part of a spoof segment on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. So old Jonny boy might have a vested interest in how this story proceeds. If I’m honest, this trailer seems a little loosely cut. Shots linger for half a second longer than they should. Also, all the characters speak in English, but the script doesn’t hide that this is their second language. Dialogue seems stilted and staged, and there are hints that it might become saccharine during the third act as it turns into a heart-warming story of one man’s fight against impossible odds. I was hoping for something with a little more bite and venom from the satirical sniper.
