Jack O’Connell was a force of nature in Skins and Starred Up. His screen presence belongs to that of a much older performer. His charisma is captivating and his voice is unique among the pantheon of British stars. He hasn’t yet learned to errod the authenticity of his accent for the tastes of less accepting cinema goers. A genuine movie star who also convinces as a down to earth bloke is almost impossible to find. In fact, he make me reassess how good I thought others were at encompassing those very roles. ’71 is a look at Belfast through the eyes of a British solder caught behind enemy lines during British intervention in The Troubles. Yes, I’m concerned how the perspective of the British soldier will represent Irish nationalists – in this trailer they almost seem like the opposing gangs in The Warriors – but for such a complex issue we can’t rely on two minutes and thirty seconds to see how they’ll be represented, we’ll have to see how the full ninety minutes pan out.
