Doubt. Something which many Bloc Party fans may feel when they first hear former front man Kele’s new single. We are made aware from the first 60 seconds of the track that Kele has moved away from british indie rock and firmly into the realms of electronica. However, as soon as the vocals kick in, we are immediately transported to an indie club somewhere in Shoreditch circa 2007 as Kele’s distinct voice is instantly recognisable. It is then that we realise this new offering is not a million miles away from a Bloc Party hit after all.
Kele has clearly cleverly used his years of expertise to create his most honest record to date. With lyrics such as “with your love i’m confident, help me get back to my home”, although a little self indulgent, seem to be the most heartfelt and genuine so far. These lyrics work well with the deep house vibe which will slot into the current club scene seamlessly.
This may be a preview into what we can expect from his second solo album titled “Tricks”, due for release on October 13th through the singer’s own label Lilac Records.
