Deerhoof – Paradise Girls (Single Review)

Paradise Girls is a bare-bones, feminist punk song, calling for strong, smart women to take up the cause. “Our heroes on this song are Joan Jett, Janet Jackson, Kim Gordon, Kathleen Hanna. It’s about how girls are and have always been smarter,” says drummer Greg Saunier.

Now in their 20th year, Deerhoof is obviously still committed to a minimalist attitude and sound. With Paradise Girls, they manage to create an entire audio landscape with just the simplest elements, from straightforward guitar chords to cowbells.

Paradise Girls is a follow-up to the much more aggressive Exit Only, the first single released from their upcoming 13th album, La Isla Bonita. Compared to the previous song, Paradise Girls isn’t exactly Easy Listening, but it is a punk song you can chill out to – while thinking about women’s rights, of course.

La Isla Bonita, the album Paradise Girls is taken from, is out 4th November.
