Vince Vaughn is one of the big names rumored to be a part of the next season of True Detective. Hoping to fill series two with even more big name stars than the last, HBO is going for the veteran Hollywood funnyman. Reports are sketchy on what role he is being offered, some sources say he will be one of the detectives replacing McConaughey and Harrelson, others say he will be playing the villain.
Two things trouble me about this news. Firstly, Vince Vaughn has only played a bad guy once. That was in Gus Van Sant’s Psycho remake. An exercise in frivolity if ever there was one. Secondly, the fact that the first series had two big name, cinematic actors in it was only a small part of the programmes success. The real reason the show was so good was the writing and the direction. But I am encouraged by the prospect of the villain getting more time in this one. Let’s see if lightning can strike twice.
