Birdman: Trailer Watch

This just looks fantastic. Michael Keaton stars as a washed up Adam West style cultural icon having a mental breakdown, as he desperately tries to hang on to relevance. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s work, so far at least, has faced accusations of obtuseness and unnecessary levels of cryptic layering to his plots, obscuring the meaning of the messages he tries to convey. Here though, he looks as if he’s wrapping up his critique on 21st century values in a coherent narrative you don’t have to be a philosopher of linguistics to decipher. If he pulls this off, it will prove you can have a deep and meaningful film without filling it with pretentious gobbledegook and symbolism so opaque it loses all meaning. Otherwise, the trailer depicts his fall from sanity nicely, while keeping enough hidden to stop us thinking we’ve seen the best bits. The trailer makes superb use of everything, from the cinematography to the soundtrack . Good job, well done.
