J Mascis - Every Morning (Single Review)

Taken from his new solo album Tied to a Star, J Mascis seems to be obsessed with the theme of everything sleep related as some of his songs featured in his album are called Heal The Star, Wide Awake and Drifting.

But the track here at Vulture Hound are loving is Every Morning and this one certainly isn’t making us fall asleep at all  in fact it is doing the total opposite. Every Morning is the second track in the album and is a tune for all those surfers, skateboarders or any outdoor activity goers.

With a great piece of music ( he seems to be doing rather well for his first solo album)  created by Masci’s guitar playing you can hear his love and passion for music in the track. The song has a catchy chorus and a fusion of electronic beats and drum beats, to me that should not work but it does.

It is a simple song with no strings attached; it is just a man and a guitar with percussion in the background that does not need or feature any complicated musical techniques to make it work.

I do enjoy the use of variety of levels in the song as it starts off in a slow and quite gentle laid back tone and then gradually builds up to change the mood to a feel good vibe. It is as if Mascis is giving everything he has got when it comes to showing off his musical talent.  Just starting off with the acoustic guitar, waking up, eating breakfast and getting ready for the day ahead to then swapping that for the beast of the guitar kingdom, the electric guitar and is out to get ready to party and have fun.

If that is what his every morning sounds like then no wonder he wants to sing about his daily routine because the result is fantastic and when he has Ken Maiuri (Young@Heart Chorus), Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion) and Chan Marshall (Cat Power) to join him I cannot wait to hear the rest of his tracks from his new album Tied to a Star.
