Divergent is the latest in the long line of young adult saga’s for teenage girls making it to the big screen. This one appears to create a 1984 style narrative and place within it a young girl fighting against the system. After an intriguing opening that makes it seem like a more philosophical Hunger Games it is reduced to a montage of training sequences that make it look like regular Hunger Games. Apparently she is a Divergent, a risk to the stability of their system, someone who cannot be placed into one of their neat little boxes. Subtle. This looked so much more interesting when it appeared she would fight them with ideas and principals, not guns and blandly choreographed martial arts. Oh well. Opens on the fourth of April.
