The three-day music and media conference that is Liverpool Sound City is back for its fifth outing. Taking place from 17-19 May, it boasts pioneers of all genres from the gritty, lo-fi electro of Alt-J and Ghostpoet to art-rock from Toy. Folk legend Willy Mason is also on the bill along with Slow Club, Mystery Jets, Alkaline Trio and Professor Green. Michael Kiwanuka, winner of the BBC’s Sound of 2012 poll, will be at the event to perform tracks from his album ‘Home Again’.
Sound City also plays host to a number of exciting up-and-coming artists, and is unique in its inventive choice of venues. This year, they include abandoned warehouses and bombed-out churches. A new addition for 2012 is the Sound City Expo – a convention showcasing the tools and software used in digital music production.
The team behind the Liverpool event have also organised a sister festival in New York, taking place on 12 March. New York Sound City will feature The La’s playing their first US show in 20 years, with support from Dutch Uncles and Polish act Paula and Karol, who’ve been championed by The Guardian. Further international events are yet to be announced.
