Last night saw the most prestigious awards show in Television take place in London the best and brightest (and worst!) of British TV gathered to pat each other on the back and smile as someone else collected an award.
Below is the full list of winners but here a few selected highlights first:
Best Drama Series – Sherlock
Supporting Actor – Martin Freeman (Sherlock)
The excellent Sherlock took home two awards, with Series 2 on the horizon and the awards taking place on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s birthday it’s seemed fitting than Steven Moffat & Mark Gatis’s reinvention should win.
Entertainment – The Cube
Beating off Have I Got News for You and The X Factor, The Cube surprised me (and Philip Schofield) by winning this award; it doesn’t get the same amount of ratings as the X Factor but still does a respectable job on ITV.
YouTube Audience Award – The Only Way is Essex
Really!!! The only award voted by the public and proof that Internet access should be a privilege not a right. TOWIE beat out Downton Abbey, Miranda, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, Sherlock and The Killing. There were more orange faces on the stage than a family reunion for Dale Winton’s fan club. TOWIE is a planned reality show which seems to create a whole new world of celebrity dullards.
Leading Actor – Daniel Rigby (Eric & Ernie)
Daniel fought off both Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Matt Smith (Dr Who) for this award for his portrayal of Eric Morecombe, he did look shocked to have won.
Leading Actress – Vicky McClure (This is England 86)
Channel 4 must have been elated when there recent gritty drama brought home one of the big awards here. Vicky had also appeared in Five Daughters which saw Natalie Press nominated in the same category.
BAFTA Fellowship – Sir Trevor McDonald
And Finally…yes the man most people in theUKwent to bed with during the 90’s collected the biggest award of the night. Maybe now we can all forgive him for the awful News Knight with Sir Trevor McDonald!
