What to Watch – Week Commencing 19th April

On Saturday Sky Atlantic will screen a new US musical drama. Given the huge success Fox has had with Glee it’s no surprise that another US network would jump on board with their own take on the genre. Smash (which was billed as a Glee for grownups) focuses on the behind the scenes workings of a fictional musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe. As musical dramas go (and I don’t rate them highly) this is quite a good series. You must understand that “quite good” is high praise from me when it comes to this sort of show. The characters don’t spontaneously burst into song as much as those hideously precocious Glee lot. The cast is rather impressive and if you’re need of a non-taxing easy on the brain series this does the job nicely. (more…)

What to Watch – Week Commencing 1st April

silent-witness

Sunday sees the welcome return of Silent Witness. It’s actually series 15 of the forensic crime drama  which is a huge achievement for any BBC drama. The opening episode which starts on Sunday and concludes Monday, is a little confusing to begin with but has an opening sequence that will see you drop your cup of tea all over the dog. It’s a tense and dark episode that keeps up the standard that was set by the series a few years ago. It’s a gruesome start but that’s what we’ve come to expect from the series and I personally love the chemistry between all three of our criminal pathologists. (more…)

Strangely these what to watch posts often post a challenge I’m not always up. Sometimes it really is the case of What to Watch? What’s new, fresh and exciting. Luckily for me (and for you lucky, lucky readers) there’s quite a bit this week. (more…)

Monday sees the return of ITV’s most popular drama from 2011 not to star Maggie Smith. Downton may’ve been one of the most talked about when it came to ITV drama in 2011 but Scott and Bailey, which debuted last summer did fantastically in the ratings and was taken to the hearts of viewers and critics alike. With  wonderful paring of Surrane Jones and Lesley Sharp coupled with razor sharp and humerous scripts from the equally wonderful Sally Wainwright its really no surprise Scott and Bailey proved such a hit first time round. Its fantastic to have it back and it has gone from 6 episodes to eight the first of which starts Monday at 9pm with a 2-part episode that sees are heroic female officers deal with the gruesome murders of seemingly unconnected men. Everything we loved from series 1 is back: the humor, the grittyness and the absolutely wonderful Ameila Bulmore who returns (to use a phrase I’m not fond of) as feisty boss Gill. The secondary storylines are just as interesting as the main crime story of each episode there’s absolutely nothing not to like. (more…)

What to Watch – Week Commencing 4th February

This week is a little low on new comedy or drama what with things like Prisoner’s Wives and Inside Men just starting their runs. Monday sees the continuation of the atmospheric and down right creepy
of Whitechapel. The series, comprised of three 2-part stories returned last week and appeared to back on form. I’ll be honest I was keen not to go straight to bed after the opening episode. This second episode (or part 2 to episode 1) sees more twists and turns as Chandler and his team try to find their escaped prisoner and discover whether he was responsible for the brutal murders of four well liked Tailors.
WHITECHAPEL CONTINUES MONDAY AT 9PM (more…)

I take a look at this week’s not to be missed new TV. New dramas take the place of Masterchef which has been the forefront of BBC1’s 9pm slot for six unbearable and frying pan filled evenings and after a rather disappointing Christmas trip to India the Top Gear boys return of a new series.
