We all know the theme tune, we all know the catchphrase…but how many of us actually ever watched the show! Hawaii Five O was a sixties cop drama set in Hawaii which has recently been remade and updated. The original was iconic but I have to admit not one which I ever tagged “Must See TV”.
Film aficionados have probably watched a foreign (probably French) film with subtitles at one time or another. I can imagine them thinking beforehand ‘This is going to be a waste of time’ but if the film turned out to be good then I expect they may have searched for some other examples of the genre.
If you have never heard of Carnivàle it may simply mean it is not a TV show for you. Not that it’s exclusive but it is demanding and doesn’t appeal to everyone. Let’s be honest – Carnivàle does carry a certain amount of weirdness. It’s a Lady Gaga amongst TV shows – but without the global commercial success and unnecessary pseudo-intellectual contexts. However, I highly recommend taking the time to watch the whole of it – as the creator Daniel Knauf said: “you may not understand everything that goes on but it does make a certain sense”.
