“It’s much more punk to look after yourself!” – Dream Nails (The VH Interview)

We recently had the pleasure of catching up with the kick-ass girls in Dream Nails for a quick chat about feminism, sex with a woman, and the zombie apocalypse. Here’s what they had to say.

So for anyone who might not know, could you give us a little introduction to who you are and your background?

We’re Dream Nails (Janey, Anya, Lucy and Mimi) and we’re punk witches from London who’ve gained a reputation for our riotous live shows and feminist politics. The band started in the summer of 2015 and since then we’ve toured across Europe with Cherry Glazerr, headlined the Sisterhood stage at Glastonbury and are soon playing in Istanbul!

Even in 2018 there still seems to be a lot of stigma attached to being a feminist, why do think this is?

Anyone who chooses to reject societal norms faces stigma. Women are socially conditioned under patriarchy to maintain their sense of self by pleasing others. When we stand up for ourselves, define our boundaries and stop trying to make others feel comfortable, it can be perceived as quite threatening and shocking! Especially for men – who are sometimes a bit thrown in social situations where they don’t have full control over women in the way that they expect.

bell hooks explains this really well when she says that: “Cultures of domination attack self-esteem, replacing it with a notion that we derive our sense of being from dominion over another. Patriarchal masculinity teaches men that their sense of self and identity, their reason for being, resides in their capacity to dominate others.” So actually, when women challenge men’s control – it shakes men to their very core and they kick back against feminism.

Fuck stigma though – stand your ground. Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression. Anyone who has a problem with that is clearly on the wrong side of history!

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

Well, in just over a week we have a headline show at Rich Mix in London, which we’re very excited for. And after that, a hell of a lot of touring! Scandinavia this week, Live at Leeds and Handmade Fest in May, and then a chunky summer of festival bookings ranging from a feminist festival in Istanbul to the debaucherous mess that is Boomtown Fair.

We also want to have a couple of secret shows – available only to people on our fan club mailing list (Dream World!). We love hanging out with our fans!

What should every woman try at least once in her life?

Sex with another woman.

What advice would give to girls wanting to start a band?

Surround yourself with people who support you and nourish your confidence, and remember that what you have to say is so valuable. Before you even pick up an instrument, you need the confidence to play it and a belief in your vision! Our sense of self and resilience is always grounded in community – so make sure you have one, and the rest will come naturally.

What is on your bucket list?

Headline Reading and Leeds! Play Tokyo! Fly in the Hello Kitty jet!

Who would be your ultimate dinner party guest, alive or dead?

Chavela Vargas! She looks so much fun. Hopefully she would share some really dirty jokes and then serenade us after the meal.

In a movie about the band, who would play you?

Janey: Natasha Lyonne
Anya: Winona Ryder
Lucy: Young Barbara Streisand
Mimi: Kate Winslet

What did you have for breakfast?

Homemade berry and pear smoothies. We’re on tour right now and it’s how we all stay healthy!! Touring is exhausting and wrecks your immune system otherwise – that whole thing about tours being a constant party is such a self-destructive cliche. As women in a world that seeks to grind us down, it’s much more punk to look after yourself!

Which member of the band would definitely NOT survive the zombie apocalypse

No Nail left behind! We’d all survive the apocalypse ourselves by pretending to be zombies.
