Following last month’s release of their sophomore album, The Underside of Power, Algiers have today released a new video for latest single, ‘Cleveland‘.
The clip, directed by frontman Franklin James Fisher, alongside Marisa Gesualdi and Sam Campbell, is a powerful mix of lo-fi imagery, interlaced with the principles of the Black Panthers’ Ten-Point Program. A striking video, for a striking song. Watch it, below.
In a recent interview with Vulture Hound, Fisher talked about the meaning behind the track:
“We tried to find a way of expressing the not so recent phenomenon of systematic and institutional murdering of black people, that’s been going on for as long as America has been in existence… ‘Cleveland’ is very much about that theme I’m constantly exploring – never really finding justice in the world and trying to find some divine vindication. There’s all these people who think they’ve gotten away with these things, at some point you like to imagine there will be divine justice for what they’ve done… It’s a ‘finger pointing’ song, calling out the names of these perpetrators who hoped it was all snuffed out and forgotten.”
The transatlantic 4-piece, consisting of Fisher, Ryan Mahan, Lee Tesche, and former Bloc Party man, Matt Tong, have also announced details of an upcoming European Tour. The band, who have just come off a huge stadium tour with Depeche Mode, will start in Eindhoven on November the 1st, concluding with a string of dates in the UK, playing shows in Liverpool, Glasgow, Leeds, London, and Brighton (full dates and ticketing links, below).
Mixing an eclectic musical palette of post-punk, industrial, gospel and Northern soul, with sociopolitical themes of police and state oppression, political unrest and anti-colonialism, The Underside of Power, received widespread acclaim on its release in June; Vulture Hound describing it as “precisely what the world needs now”.
