Gears of War Movie Gets Avatar Sequel Writer

Universal Studios has announced that Shane Salerno will write the screenplay for the live-action Gears of War adaptation, according to a report by Deadline.

Gears of War
is a bestselling video game franchise created and originally owned by Epic Games, before Microsoft Studios acquired the rights in 2014 and handed it to The Coalition, a Microsoft development studio dedicated exclusively to the series. Originally an Xbox 360 exclusive, the series transitioned to the Xbox One with its latest installment, Gears of War 4, and a few of the games have been ported to PC.

Set on a fictional Earth-like planet known as Sera, Gears of War explores the conflict between humanity and a subterranean race of reptilian hominids known as The Locust Horde. The titular Gears is what human soldiers are known as. Regarding the adaptation, series co-creator and head of The Coalition Rod Fergusson said in late 2016, when the movie was first announced, that it will not be based on any particular game, but it will instead be an original story set in the universe.

Shane Salerno’s writing credits include the four Avatar sequels currently in production as well as Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. He is also the founder and president of The Story Factory, which produces film and TV series based on literary properties.

The Gears of War movie has no planned release date as of yet.
