‘Self-Help’ may be a diluted, over-subscribed industry, but there’s money in it, lots of money, and Vulture Hound wants a piece of it. So who better than Frank Hamilton, with his unique brand of uplifting and infectious songwriting, to get us up and running with his wonderfully compiled Guest Playlist: ’10 Songs That Make Life Slightly Less Awkward’.
It’s a playlist that also ties in perfectly with Frank’s up-coming new LP, Songs To Make Life Slightly Less Awkward an album that’s sounding pretty damn good. He dropped the funky cut ‘Lovedrug’ earlier in the year, a track which Frank describes as; “a pop song about addiction… something most of us have struggled with at times. I’m not talking about tabloid style, headline grabbing addictions like drugs, alcohol and gambling – I’m talking about anything and everything. Love, the internet, Candy Crush, ANYTHING.”
The follow up to the ambitious #OneSongaWeek project, in which the London based musician wrote, recorded and released a song a week for the entirety of 2012, Songs To Make Life Slightly Less Awkward will be improving lives and inspiring confidence across bedrooms and in headphones, nationwide, when it’s released on September 30th.
Here are some songs that make my life slightly less awkward. Hopefully they’ll do the same for you…
I Hear the Bells – Mike Doughty
I had the pleasure of meeting Mike on tour with my buddies Wheatus last year and aside from being a true gent he’s also an incredible writer. This tune gives me all the right feels and takes me back to hearing it live for the first time with just him and a guitar.
Parking Lot – Vant
I don’t know much about Vant other than my old housemate at uni Henry plays guitar for them and the songs are great. The lyrical concept in this one is just awesome.
Support Tours – Jeffrey Lewis
Jeffery Lewis telling it like it is. Standard.
Lottery Winners on Acid – Crimea
I remember seeing this on Top of the Pops back in the day and instantly falling in love with the band. They’ll always be one of my favourites. I wish they were still making music.
Alison – Elvis Costello
I was lucky enough to play Hyde Park on the same day as Costello a few years ago and watched his set from the press tower. Alison is one of those songs that makes me stop whatever I’m doing and just listen.
Photograph – Weezer
I might be the only person in the world who’s favourite Weezer record is the Green Album but I don’t care – I think it’s genius. Pop-rock perfection. This is one of my favourites from the record.
I’m Alright Now – David Ford
I remember seeing a band called Easyworld back in the day and when they split the singer David went solo. He does some amazing stuff live with a loopstation (check out a video called State of the Union) and was a huge inspiration for me in the early days.
Kicks – Lauren Aquilina
I’ve known Lauren since 2012 when we met during #OneSongaWeek and she featured on Flaws & Ceilings… and I think ‘Kicks’ just trumped ‘Fools’ as my all time favourite LA song.
Miami – Will Smith
This is on here for a few reasons. Firstly because you can’t not smile when it’s on and secondly because it’s one of 3 or 4 rap songs that I know all the words to – we bust it out in soundcheck sometimes.
Mrs. Potters Lullaby – Counting Crows
This song contains some of my favourite words by one of my favourite lyricists, Adam Duritz.
Songs To Make Life Slightly Less Awkward is out on September 30th. You can hear latest single ‘Saturday Night’, here.
