Guest Playlist: Raindear

Back in April, Rebecca Bergcrantz (aka Raindear) released one of the hidden gems of the year so far. Her debut album was an ambitious, personal and darkly gothic masterpiece. Mixing moments of dark-wave and synth-pop with eastern influences, the music on Embers was a beautiful accompaniment to Bercrantzes’ powerful and often hunting vocal performance (read the VH review, here).

However, she’s not just about the darkness and intensity. Embers is an incredibly accessible pop record, always managing to retain an element of quirkiness, even in its deepest moments. And, to add further proof of her pop-credentials, she’s put together our most poppy and peppy guest playlist yet!

Not only that, this week she also dropped a brilliant tribute to Prince. Her stripped back cover of his 1979 single, ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’, isn’t just another minimalistic ‘live lounge’ cheap trick. No, it’s another chance to hear her utilising all the elements that made Embers so special; verses build and evolve, adding layers of synth and percussion, providing Bergcrantz with a pulsating soundtrack, over which she gives yet another stunning vocal performance.

Check out the track and her Guest Playlist below.

‘Happy Peppy Tracks To Clean The House To’:

Little Dragon – A New
Great intro track on Little Dragon’s album Machine Dreams, my personal favourite album from them.

Detektivbyrån – Life/Universe
Detektivbyrån is a nostalgia trip to my days as a teen dancing around at festivals, watching this band live at least ten times. Scandinavian, strange and unique sound.

Rihanna – Needed Me
Rihanna is onto something good now. You gotta love this new song of hers.

The Prodigy – Spitfire
Kind of re-discovered The Prodigy the other day. Cooler and edgier stuff is hard to find. And no one else sounds like them. This song gets 5/5 stars. Their music will give you the energy you need to clean an entire mansion!

Ott  – Squirrel and Biscuits
Anyone who isn’t familiar with this demon of a producer called Ott has now got some homework to do. Groovy trippy and very interesting shit.

The Naked And The Famous – A Stillness
Great great track by The Naked And The Famous, what the hell happened to this band??

Makeness – 14 Drops
Very cool productions by recently discovered Makeness. I found it on a playlist that my faves from Jungle made.

Talking Heads – Burning Down the House
So much attitude in this song. So bad ass. I love it!

The Avalanches – Since I Left You
Happy summery stuff from new discovery, The Avalanches.

Mø – Final Song
Mø is brilliant and this song is lush, yet almost a little too poppy for my taste (but I can’t help loving it).

Tom Jones – It’s Not Unusual
A great cleaning hit. I promise! Also, Tom Jones has one of the best voices.

Raindear’s debut album Embers is out now via Vanguard Music Boulevard.
