Edge of Tomorrow has some very interesting concepts it has the opportunity to play with. Something we know already is that Tom Cruise plays a coward. This is a pretty new notion for the cinema going audience, in every film Cruise has ever been in he has played the model of the ideal American Man. Even in Collateral his silver fox of an assassin was the picture of sophisticated distinction. What we don’t know however is the extent to which the shades of the Normandy Landings will be echoed by the film. It has all sorts of good stuff to tackle there, conscription and invasion to name just two. You can’t hold out much hope though, especially where a Tom Cruise film is involved – his films always seem to treat themes as nothing more than a selling point. As long as this one doesn’t downplay British involvement though, I shan’t be too upset.
