Whoever you are Nashville is one of the few cities synonymous with great American music. But in a place where many seem reluctant to stop looking back at the past, Alva Leigh looks forward. Although however much she might have a resonance with her Tennessee home, her influences and loves go much broader than country music and South-eastern stereotypes: Kate Bush, Peggy Lee, Fiona Apple as well as Nashville’s own Dolly Parton. Having relocated to North London to take her sound further, her single “Modern Love Song”, a folksier take on great pop writing which has taken a previous song of hers “Calling” on to the TV Show Grey’s Anatomy, is due for release in the UK on the 31st of March.
Alva recreates stripped-back piano music in the same vein as her musical heroes and gives it contemporary punch. A theme she hopes to continue with her album out late this year “Modern Love Songs”. Something she’ll find an audience for no matter where her globetrotting takes her.
