The achievements of Val Ventura so far are very impressive – she recorded her first EP at the age of 19, didn’t graduate from high school and yet has her own record label which she releases her music from. From the tender age of 15 she has been writing music and has even come back from a serious car crash to be where she stands today. Her new single, Sun Down California, is a more upbeat affair: a punk-pop combination. Yet it failed to strike a chord; I found it to be too long for a song with such punk inspirations and felt its lyrics bordered on being laughable at times. Having listened to her other material it is clear Val Ventura is a talented artist, however here I think she tried to be something she shouldn’t try to be again.
