As the days get shorter and cooler, many of us search for some sounds to give us the impression of a few more moments of warm summer sun on our faces, and Blacks& may just be the answer.
An LA-based four-piece, Blacks& are Donald Eley, Tiger Smith, Jutty Shark, and Jules Bellin. They began playing as a band in the summer of 2011, when they came together over their shared love of rhythmic tropical funk and melodic synth pop. In this short period, they’ve already carved out an impressively large following on LA’s live circuit.
The band’s debut single is called ‘The Race Is On’. The track begins sparsely with crisp percussion and muffled keyboards, building layer upon layer, with guitars and reverb-filled, effervescent vocals. The track is very reminiscent of the Afro-inspired sounds of Vampire Weekend and Paul Simon, but with more chilled-out atmospherics. ‘The Race Is On’ is the languid sound of late summer, perfect for easing you in to the cold autumn months.
‘The Race Is On’ is released on October 22 on 7” and download, via new London imprint Hey Moon. The digital bundle also comes with bonus track “What They Think”.
