Veep – Episode 2 “Frozen Yoghurt”

Title

A catchup of second episode of Veep – “Fronzen Yoghurt”.

In episode 2 of Veep, all of Selina Meyer’sdreams (temporarily) come true.  While the president in South Africa, the White House hears reports that he is having severe chest pains, and as a result, Selina becomes the most powerful woman in the world, running the country while he is incapacitated.

The moment that Selina is told this news is played beautifully by Julia Louis-Dreyfus as she struggles to keep a smile off her face, so delighted is she to be taking the president’s place, even though he may be about to die.  It forces Jonah, the White House aide who loves to antagonise Selina and her staff, into becoming much more humble and pandering to Selina, offering to get her coffee while Selina tells Amy that he’ll be the first to go if she gets the big job.

The news comes after Selina had enjoyed a promising start to her day, with her Clean Jobs initiative getting the green light.  She wants to celebrate this news by getting out and meeting the public, with Amy being quickly shot down when she suggests a local book fair, as Mike tells her that kids are unpredictable and wet their pants.  Dan’s idea is to visit a local frozen yoghurt store run by three generations of African-Americans, and will allow Selina to meet some ‘normals’.

But before that, Selina has a meeting with a Senator Doyle about filibuster reform, something she is nervous about, as he has a reputation for being a ‘real hog fucker’.  Before this meeting, Dan and Gary have been arguing amongst themselves, with Dan asking Gary if he’d take a bullet for Selina.  Little does he know that he’ll (kind of) get the chance to do so during the meeting.  One of the Senator’s aides has gastric flu, and Gary notices that he is about to sneeze over the Veep, diving into the path of the sneeze to take the hit for her.

He’s very pleased with himself after doing it, but quickly regrets his actions as he experiences the harsh effects of the bug and struggles to keep control of himself and his bodily functions.

Not long after Selina has been rushed to a White House situation room, she’s informed that there was a mistake, and that the president was merely suffering from heartburn.  She reluctantly leaves, with Jonah reminding her about her appointment at the frozen yoghurt store.   But when Selina arrives there, she too is feeling the effects of the bug, and struggles to pose for photos while eating some of the now melted yoghurt.

It’s another episode of Veep that is full of sharp one-liners and shows the ups and downs that Selina experiences as the vice president.  Armando Iannucci also has a good feel for the day-to-day realities of US politics, and all these things combined make for a great show.
